About the event
Bill Christophersen has played traditional music in the New York area since 1971. He fiddled with the Fly By Night String Band and the Lazy Aces, two seminal old-time-revival string bands, and currently performs with the Fish Family (an old-school New England contradance band) and the Rock-House Gamblers, whose repertoire combines old-time, bluegrass and country. Introduced to trad music by the New Lost City Ramblers, he has recorded with Tom Paley and accompanied John Cohen in concert. His most recent album is Hell & High Water, a collection of Appalachian and Southern fiddle tunes.
Phyllis Elkind is a singer and guitar player splitting her time between New York City and the Hudson Valley. She has played in Triboro, an Americana trio with two CDs to its name, CrossStitch, with a focus on fiddle tunes and brother duets, and Grand Central Breakdown, an all-woman bluegrass band. Her most recent groups are The Sentimentals (with Gene Yellin and Sam Dallas) and Bill & Phyl (with Bill Christophersen). Phyllis is also a long-time teacher. She teaches bluegrass and country harmony at Jalopy Theatre and has taught Doo Wop at the McBurney YMCA, along with private harmony, guitar and piano lessons.
